Join us today as we explore @HamiltonOh for the #GOPCThread! Named after Alexander Hamilton, Fort Hamilton was founded in 1791 and served as a supply station for General Arthur St. Clair’s troops. Today, the city is home to 63,000 people! #GOPCThread
By the mid-1800s, @HamiltonOh was a major manufacturer for the region’s farm production equipment. In 1845 the Hamilton Hydraulic System, a series of canals, provided a new supply of power for industry. This led to an industrial and population boom from 1840 to 1860. #GOPCThread
Beckett Paper opened in @HamiltonOh in 1848. It was the first paper mill west of the Allegheny Mountains and spurred the creation of nearby mills. At its peak “Paper Valley” was home to 30 paper mills. Beckett ceased operations in 2012, the last paper mill to close. #GOPCThread
Former industrial buildings like Beckett Paper are providing the city new opportunities. In 2021, @HamiltonOh purchased the former mill and is partnering with a developer to convert it to apartments. Pending historic tax credits, construction could begin this year. #GOPCThread
Many of downtown Hamilton’s buildings have commercial tenants and residential tenants, thanks to a local loan fund that leaders created a decade ago to revitalize these buildings. Other cities have replicated the CORE Fund
Spooky Nook Sports @snschampionmill is a 1 million sqft sports complex that opened in 2022 in @HamiltonOh. Bringing thousands of visitors to the area for tournaments, Spooky Nook is supporting businesses and spurring additional development. #GOPCThread
Many of the successes in municipal leadership and downtown revitalization can be created to a host of programs that have been implemented in the last 15 years, including internships within the city and reverse scholarships for people who move to the city

Through StreetSpark, a partnership between @HamiltonOh, @Fitton_Center, and @hamohfoundation, local artists have painted 19 murals and 17 utility boxes in the city since 2016. Each mural tells its own story and brings vibrancy to Hamilton’s downtown.
Come explore the past in @HamiltonOh’s three historic districts! The Dayton Lane, German Village, and Rossville Historic Districts contain hundreds of structures showcasing a variety of 19th century architectural styles. #GOPCThread
Don’t leave @HamiltonOh without grabbing a pint from Municipal Brew Works @MuniBrewWorks! Located in a historic building on the Great Miami River, this brewery is in the heart of downtown and within walking distance to parks, restaurants, and shops. #GOPCThread
Attention outdoor enthusiasts! Gilmore MetroPark in @HamiltonOh is where you need to be. This 268-acre park is home to miles of hiking trails, paved paths, and acres of wetlands making it a prime wildlife and bird watching destination. #GOPCThread
In March of 1913, @HamiltonOh suffered a devastating flood resulting in 200 casualties and $100 million worth of damage. During the flood the equivalent to one month’s discharge over Niagara Falls submerged the region. #GOPCThread
