This weekend, the Columbus Dispatch ran an important series on differing population trajectories around Ohio. According to the state, fourteen counties will gain population and 74 will experience population stability or contraction by 2050.
GOPC has been talking about Ohio’s diverging population trends for several years, including in our 2022 report Ohio + Columbus: A Tale of Two States and as a guest on a 2023 podcast.
The projected population numbers are sobering, but they are not destiny. There is much that we can do to bend the curve and maintain vibrant, prosperous communities. And that’s important because 60% of the state’s GDP is generated from counties that are expected to lose residents.
GOPC’s current policy platform outlines state policies and tools that account for local context and will equip local leaders to offer the housing, downtowns, amenities, and economic opportunities Ohio needs. We are using our platform in conversations with policymakers ahead of next Spring’s Main Operating Budget and Transportation Budget.
