This week’s #GOPCThread covers the research demonstrating that #Equitabledevelopment is both the right thing to do + good economic policy. For more check out our new report with @landpolicy "Equitably Developing America’s Smaller Legacy Cities."
Smaller #legacycities need sound economic growth strategies to combat persistent racial and income inequality. Equitable development is a proven strategy. #GOPCThread
#Equity is the goal of making opportunity accessible to all, regardless of background & circumstance & to make special effort to improve outcomes for low-income populations & communities of color to bring them into parity with other populations. #GOPCThread
#EquitableDevelopment strategies are community development, revitalization, & economic development interventions used to advance the goal of #equity. Our report identifies 7 types of strategies. Check out our Policy Brief. #GOPCThread
Equality & #equity are not synonymous. Committing to equity means tailoring solutions & supports to local needs & circumstances so that everyone thrives. @CAWI_IVTF illustrates the concept in this graphic. #GOPCThread
#Equity researchers @Prof_MPastor & @chrisbenner find “High inequality…has a negative impact on growth and these impacts are in fact stronger in regions with what many in the literature call ‘weak market’ central cities.” #GOPCThread
The inverse is also true: Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland research finds “a skilled workforce, high levels of racial inclusion, and progress on income equality correlate strongly and positively with economic growth.” #GOPCThread
#Equitabledevelopment strategies are critical to addressing inequities because researchers find that #revitalization alone without an #equity focus does not correct underlying inequities. #GOPCThread
#AllanMallach’s work on #legacycity revitalization found: “Revitalization…experienced in these cities, does not confer citywide benefits; if anything, it may even redirect jobs, resources, and wealth away from large parts of the city.” #GOPCThread
@UrbanInstitute research supports this conclusion too. They find: “Across all types of cities, local leaders are beginning to recognize that economic growth does not automatically lead to inclusion; rather, intentional strategies are needed.” #GOPCThread
The research is clear that #EquitableDevelopment is smart policy for #legacycities. We’ve written a report outlining key strategies & highlighting case studies to help local stakeholders & residents to get started. #GOPCThread
